چکیده

Thermally activated switching and the energy landscape of submicron-sized magnetic elements are studied using the string method. For thin films, we found that switching proceeds by two generic scenarios: Domain-wall propagation and reconnection followed by edge domain switching, or vortex nucleation at the boundary followed by vortex propagation through the sample. The second scenario is preferred for thicker films whereas the first is preferred for thin ~less than 20 nm! films. The energy landscape of such a system is nicely summarized on the plane spanned by the average magnetization in the in-plane directions. For three-dimensional samples, we found that switching proceeds by vortex propagation through the sample. The implication of the Landau–Lifshitz dynamics is also discussed. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1536737#

Magnetization reversal dynamics with submicron-scale coercivity variation in ferromagnetic films

We report experimental evidence that submicron-scale local coercivity variation determines magnetization reversal dynamics in ferromagnetic thin films. Local coercivity distribution is generated from a twodimensional array of hysteresis loops each of 0.3230.32 mm spots simultaneously measured using a magneto-optical microscope magnetometer. We directly demonstrate that domain reversal pattern i...

Magnetic switching of ferromagnetic thin films under thermal perturbation

In this paper, we study the magnetic switching of submicron-sized ferromagnetic thin films under thermal noise and external field. It is shown that the presence of the noise makes the switching easier with weaker external fields and induces more intermediate metastable states in the switching pathways. Different switching pathways are preferred at different temperatures. A quantitative relation...

Magnetization switching in small ferromagnetic particles: Nucleation and coherent rotation

The mechanisms of thermally activated magnetization switching in small ferromagnetic particles driven by an external magnetic field are investigated. For low uniaxial anisotropy the spins rotate coherently while for sufficiently large uniaxial anisotropy they behave Ising-like, i.e., the switching then is due to nucleation. The crossover from coherent rotation to nucleation is studied for the c...

HEAT TREATMENT AND OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPY OF CR4+:GGG FOR PASSIVELY Q-SWITCHING ND:GARNET LASERS

High quality GGG:Cr,Ca crystal for passive Q-switching Nd:garnet lasers has been grown by the Czochralski method. Thermal treatment of GGG crystals co-doped with Cr4+ and Ca2+ at different temperatures is investigated. The absorption spectra were resolved into different peaks, of modified Gaussian line-shape. Transition from octahedral sites to tetrahedral ones is thermally activated. An...

Magnetization switching in a Heisenberg model for small ferromagnetic particles

We investigate the thermally activated magnetization switching of small ferromagnetic particles driven by an external magnetic field. For low uniaxial anisotropy the spins can be expected to rotate coherently, while for sufficient large anisotropy they should behave Ising-like, i.e., the switching should then be due to nucleation. We study this crossover from coherent rotation to nucleation for...
